Plein Air Painting 11th March 2026, 10am, Wakapuaka Cemetery
Meet us for plein air painting on Wednesday 11th March 2026, 10am, at Wakapuaka Cemetery, 188A Atawhai Drive, Atawhai, Nelson. Parking is available at the bottom of the hill from where you can walk up to the cemetery (a pretty long walk), or you can drive up to the crematorium and see if there is a carpark available. When we were there last time I found a portaloo at the bottom of the hill but I’m not sure if it is still there. Otherwise there are no toilet facilities close by that I’m aware of. A nice place to paint is by the Garin Memorial Chapel dedicated to St. Michaels. Also, if you walk past the chapel you will have a lovely view over the bay.
Please bring your painting supplies, a chair, bug spray, sun screen, morning tea/lunch and good weather.
Lunch: There is no cafe close by. Please bring a picnic lunch.
Plein air painting is scheduled for every Wednesday morning, except the 3rd Wednesday of the month. Please note, we won’t meet if the weather is not accomodating (rain or strong winds).
Barbara Doig asked me to relay this message for those who can only do plein air painting close to Nelson and Richmond:
Barbara Doig has kindly offered to organise separate plein air painting outings for those that want to stay closer to the Richmond/Nelson area. Please contact her directly if you are interested. Her phone number is 022 301 2690.
A heads up:
Usually there is no plein air painting on the 3rd Wednesday, however, it was suggested to go to Brightwater next week and meet with the Creative Day artists (former Tasman Visual Arts Group and the founding group of our plein air painting group). More info with later.
The week after it was suggested to go to Monaco.
I won’t be able to join you this time but am looking forward to painting in Brightwater next week.
