Tulips

The work is about the flowers as well as the material “paint”. The paint is applied with thick impasto palette knife strokes. Each colour stroke has its individual importance and reflects different hues, but then connects through tonal values to form an image. Both paintings, Tulips and Daffodils, relate to each other in this approach. “You have to feel your way into it. I have the idea of a subject in my head, but I can’t predict the way the paint is applied…

Emma’s Flowers

A gorgeous bouquet of flowers given to Nicole by her neighbour Emma became the inspiration for this artwork. Nicole’s intention was not only to show flowers but also the feeling that goes into picking flowers, arranging them in the bowl and the joy they give when you look at them. This feeling is expressed by the colours encircling and dancing around the bouquet.  The painting was done in oil on stretched canvas. Nicole used only the palette knife to create…

Photos of Plein Air Painting at Staples Road, Motueka (“the Kumeras”)

In March we went Plein Air Painting at "the Kumeras", an area known historically for the kumera fields on either side of Staples Road in Motueka. It  was a true delight. The weather was gorgeous, the wind a bit challenging and the incoming tide kept us on our toes as the water crept closer and closer to our easels. Lois painted on an old book cover and showed us her driftwood dogs, which she took to the Cold Store Gallery…

Nelson Lighthouse and Naked Ladies

In February 2022 the Nelson/Tasman plein air painting group did a trip to the Nelson Lighthouse. The lighthouse is located on the Boulder Bank, a lovely spot for seabirds, but a harsh and rocky environment for any vegetation. The artists had to climb over rocks and river stones to get to the lighthouse. On arrival it was such a surprise to find a bunch of Naked Ladies at the foot of the lighthouse, in this one little sheltered area. The…
