Riwaka Inlet is one of Nicole’s plein air paintings. The plein air painting group visited Riwaka and painted at the end of Wharf Road. This time, instead of painting the boat sheds, Nicole looked over the inlet towards the Richmond hills. Since the Nelson Bay is very shallow at the inlet, the sea forms little channels at low tide. This painting shows Nicole’s palette knife interpretation of the Broadgreen Historic House in Stoke/Nelson, New Zealand. The various colours applied in thick palette knife strokes have to work together through tonal values to depict the image of this old homestead with its picket fence and the flowers and bushes in front of it.
